Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows
Our Lady of Sorrows. This version of the Blessed Virgin has been worshiped by the Catholic Church since the 13th century.
The first records come from Germany, around 1221. In 1239, the veneration of the saint reached Italy. In the following centuries, the devotion spread to several countries around the world.
O Most Holy Virgin, Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ: by the overwhelming grief you experienced when you witnessed the martyrdom, the crucifixion, and the death of your divine Son.
Look upon me with eyes of compassion and awaken in my heart tender compassion for those suffering, as well as a sincere detestation of my sins, in order that, being disengaged from all undue affections for the passing joys of this earth.
I may long for the eternal Jerusalem, and that henceforth all my thoughts and all my actions may be directed toward this one most desirable object.
Honor, glory, and love to our divine Lord Jesus, and to the holy and immaculate Mother of God.
Amen.
Eja, Mater, fons amóris me sentíre vim dolóris fac, ut tecum lúgeam.
Fac, ut árdeat cor meum in amándo Christum Deum ut sibi compláceam.
Sancta Mater, istud agas, crucifíxi fige plagas cordi meo válide.
Tui Nati vulneráti, tam dignáti pro me pati, pœnas mecum dívide.
Fac me tecum pie flere, crucifíxo condolére, donec ego víxero.
Juxta Crucem tecum stare, et me tibi sociáre in planctu desídero.
Virgo vírginum præclára, mihi iam non sis amára, fac me tecum plángere.
Fac me plagis vulnerári, fac me Cruce inebriári, et cruóre Fílii.
Amen.
